Sunday Morning Ramble

Some thoughts as I try to wake up this morning:

- Episode 10 of my comedy podcast is up. Weird to think that I've recorded nearly 2 hours of goofiness this year. I hope it continues! Thanks to everyone that enjoys the show (I can name at least four.) I have several ideas for upcoming shows, so stay tuned.

- Watched the UT-Georgia game last night. It was a stunning display of mediocrity. At one point, Georgia faced a 4th-and-58. Georgia also won the game. UT is currently the 4th best team in the Sun Belt. What a sad, painful fall.

- Tonight is the finale for Breaking Bad, and I think I may write more about the show after tonight. In fact, I have several extended blog ideas that I'd like to write about at length, including:
  • A look at Breaking Bad that will probably be filled with breathless hyperbole;
  • Thoughts on Season Two of Louie that will probably be filled with breathless hyperbole;
  • The films of Stanley Kubrick, half of which will probably be filled with breathless hyperbole;
  • A review of the Coen Brothers Blu-Ray Collection, half of which, etc.;;
  • Some houghts on my time doing stand-up, which will probably be filled with breathless complaining;
  • and more!
- Today promises to be a delightful day of NFL football, a sport I adore no matter how much the league tries to ruin it with never-ending commercials, dull games, hypocritical player punishments and idiotic rules changes.Regardless of the field, be it the arts, science, government, sport or wicker basket-making, with success comes bloat. In art, it leads to Use Your Illusion 1 & 2; in baseball, it leads to 5 hour games that always end after potential future fans of the game have gone to bed. Compared to the clowns that run baseball, NFL owners seem like kind people that have their fans' best interest at heart.

- The first 3 episodes of Community have been really disappointing. Last year was one of the most deliriously fun seasons of comedy I've ever witnessed, bold and smart with an "I can't believe we're actually doing this!": energy. Well, apparently the work involved in Season 2 took a toll, as the majority of the writing staff quit. Frankly, it shows. The show still has sharp jokes and a healthy dose of weirdness, but the whole enterprise feels deflated. During the opening episode of the season, there was an opening musical number where they sang, "We're gonna be more normal and be less weird than the first 2 years combined" and later a character said "this will be like any other season, only we'll have a lot less money." I assume these were supposed to be humorous meta references to the show's handling by the network, but it just bummed me out. The odds are good that Community will be canceled this season; I hope it doesn't spend the whole time gazing at its own navel.

- Watched Scarface for the first time in years recently. (I kinda had to, since I'm a rapper after all.) is a well-made, compelling crime saga that features the phoniest accents in the history of time. Take a drink every time a character says "MANG" at the end of a sentence. You'll be dead in an hour.
